The Rockhampton Botanic Gardens are regarded as one of the best in regional Australia. Excellent specimens of palms, cycads and ferns are found throughout the beautifully manicured grounds that date back to 1873. Bask in the glorious sunshine or take the shady route to explore the delights of the gardens, with the area of the reserve spanning over 70 ha of which around half has been cultivated. The site has been heritage listed since 1999 and also is home to The Central Queensland War Memorial (The Cenotaph).
The rich, colourful history of the gardens expands to the upper gardens, with the tranquil Japanese Gardens, designed by leading Japanese landscape designer, the late Kenzo Ogata, as part of a Treaty of friendship signed after World War 2. Find your Zen in the peaceful surrounds, koi ponds, winding trails and stepping stones.
Whether you’re after the ideal venue for a family picnic, a garden lover’s sanctuary, a fun playground for the kids, or the perfect place for some tranquil ‘me time’, the Botanic Gardens is the tropical paradise for you. Take a picnic lunch and enjoy the endless grassed embankments under the shade of the giant fig trees or order a bite to eat at the Gardens Tearooms.
