Big family adventures, zero budget stress
Meet the crew at Rockhampton Zoo.
Start the Day at the Zoo
Time - 9:00am - 11:00am
Kick things off with a visit to the Rockhampton Zoo, one of the best free attractions in the region. Set within lush surrounds, the zoo is home to over 100 different native and exotic animals spanning across 30 species. From otters and meerkats to chimpanzees, crocodiles and kangaroos, it’s an easy hit with kids of all ages. It’s the perfect relaxed start to the day, with plenty of space to wander and explore.
Playtime has never been more fun!
Explore the Playground at the Botanic Gardens
Time - 11:00am - 12:30pm
Just a short stroll away, the Rockhampton Botanic Gardens playground is a must.
With its uniquely Australian animal-themed design, it’s the perfect follow-up to the zoo, keeping the wildlife theme going while giving kids a chance to run, climb, and play. There’s plenty of shaded tables and grassy areas nearby for parents to relax while the kids are busy burning off steam.
Rest, relax and recharge among the natural surroundings.
Picnic Lunch in the Gardens
Time - 12:30pm - 2:00pm
When the worms start biting, there’s no need to head far to find the perfect lunch spot. Spanning 33 hectares of meticulously landscaped, shady grounds, the Rockhampton Botanic Gardens is the perfect location for a picnic. Pack your own lunch or grab something simple from the nearby Gardens Tearooms to take away and enjoy outdoors.
Be inspired by the region's rich art and culture scene.
Explore Art & Culture
Time - 2:00pm - 4:00pm
After a busy morning outdoors, the air-conditioned Rockhampton Museum of Art is the perfect location for the afternoon. Entry is free, and the gallery regularly features exhibitions and art activities that are engaging and accessible for all ages. It’s a great way to mix in a little culture while staying cool indoors during the warmer parts of the day.
If you feel like a treat, you can stop by the Hummingbird Cafe onsite for a coffee, cold drink, or something sweet. Just keep in mind it closes at 3pm.
Soak up the glorious sunset views atop of Mount Archer's treetop boardwalk.
Take in the View at Mt Archer
Time - 4:00pm - 6:00pm
As the sun starts to lower, drive up to Mount Archer National Park to be rewarded with one of the best views in the region. The Nurim Circuit Elevated Boardwalk, which extends 25m off the side of the mountain, is a fully accessible, 500m flat boardwalk that offers spectacularly sweeping views over the city and the mighty Fitzroy River. There’s also an adventure playground for the kids and a grassy amphitheatre that’s perfect for an afternoon snack or even an early picnic dinner.
Satisfy the hunger cravings from a feast of family-friendly food options.
Affordable Eats & Family Fun
Time - 6:00pm onwards
Wrap up your day at The Terrace, the dining precinct at Stockland Rockhampton. While dinner here is an optional spend, the precinct offers plenty of affordable, family-friendly options from Mexican and Japanese favourites to burgers, schnitzel, and even Korean BBQ, so there’s something to suit everyone. For a sweet finish, ice cream from Gelatissimo is always a crowd-pleaser.
If you’ve got older kids (and a bit of energy left), head into Timezone for bowling, arcade games, and bumper cars, which is open until 9pm daily and 10pm on Saturdays.
From sunrise to sunset, Rockhampton makes it easy to create a fun, memorable family day out without spending a cent (or very close to it). With a little planning and a picnic packed, you’ll find that some of the best experiences in the Beef Capital of Australia are the simplest ones.
